Obwohl sein Einfluss auf die Geschichte der Fotografie ist nicht weniger tiefgründig, Paul Strand (1890-1976), bleibt neugierig gehüllt und paradoxe Figur. Während leidenschaftlich gewidmet der Menschheit, war er am glücklichsten, in der isolation in dem dunklen Raum. Ein Pionier Filmemacher (Manhatta, Heimat, Herz von Spanien, Die Welle), er fand den Prozess der Zusammenarbeit schmerzhaft. Strand etablierte sich in New York in den 1920er Jahren als ein Meister von Licht und Struktur, mit seiner inzwischen berühmten Foto von der Wall Street inspiriert von den Formen und der Bewegung der europäischen modernistischen Malern wie Matisse und Picasso.
