Polen, 1981. Sechs Freunde quetschen sich in ein viel zu kleines altes Auto und machen sich, angetrieben vom Wunsch nach Freiheit, auf den Weg zur polnischen Ostseeküste. Je weiter sie kommen, desto deutlicher wird, in welch marodem Zustand ihr Land ist. Die Pension, in der sie übernachten, hat nichts, was sich zum Frühstück auftischen ließe. Auch andernorts sind Lebensmittel und Benzin knapp. Es fehlt an allem. Nur Schnaps, in rauen Mengen, kann man überall und jederzeit kaufen. Genau wie ihre Heimat zerfällt auch ihr Auto Stück für Stück. Doch der Trip geht weiter, vorbei an demonstrierenden Menschenmassen, Panzern, Absperrungen und bewaffneten Polizisten.
