Wie bei vielen anderen visionären, er galt als Ketzer, und prompt unterzogen, um die schrecklichsten foltern. Autor-Regisseur Saura gelingt, ziehen einige parallelen zwischen der religiösen Verfolgung der 1700er und der politischen Willkür des Faschistischen Spanien.
