Ein Maler stellte sich tramp (Chaplin), verwüstet durch den Verlust der Frau, die er war, zu umwerben, wie ein reicher Mann, findet sich betrunken und immer drunker von minute zu minute mit einigen matrosen in einer bar, bis er buchstäblich herunterfallen. Er hält vergeblich versuchen zu ziehen, der Frau das Bild auf dem Boden mit einem Stück Kreide, bis er schließlich übergibt die Kälte (oder vielleicht stirbt, wie in dem Gedicht) am Ende des Films.
