Der Film spielt im Jahr 1807 in der Stadt Puebla, Neu-Spanien. Leo San Juan, eine schüchterne 9-jähriger junge, lebt mit seiner Großmutter und seinem älteren Bruder Nando. Leo ist ständig ängstlich, aufgrund der Legende des Nahuala, dass sein Bruder ihm erzählte. Die Legende spricht von einem alten, verlassenen Haus, in dem "La Nahuala", eine Hexe, lebt.
