Die Kaufmannstochter Constance hat sich ein Löweneckerchen gewünscht, und der Vater hat es von einem Löwen bekommen – unter der Bedingung, dass ihm der erste Mensch auszuliefern sei, dem der Vater zu Hause begegnet. Es ist Constance. Gegen den Willen des Vaters geht sie zu dem Löwen und entdeckt, dass dieser ein verwunschener Prinz ist, den nur die Liebe einer Frau erlösen kann. Sie bleibt bei ihm und bekommt ein Kind mit ihm. Als sie ihn kurz verlässt, um zur Hochzeit ihrer Schwester zu fahren, wird der Löwe in eine Taube verwandelt und fliegt davon.
