Im brodelnden der ganzen Welt sind die turbulenten frühen Jahre von Alexander Goudveyl zentrale. Die Geschichte von Alexanders kindheit ist auch die Geschichte einer ära, der in den fünfziger und sechziger Jahren, und einen nie gelösten Mordfall. Mord geht zurück auf ein authentisches Ereignis: im Jahr 1956, kurz vor Weihnachten, ein Polizist wurde erschossen, am hellichten Tag in Maassluis, während eine großangelegte evangelistische Kampagne. Der film spielt auch ein gescheiterter Fluchtversuch mit einem Hering trawler eingebunden in den turbulenten Tagen des Mai 1940.
