In Italien, unmittelbar nach dem Krieg, eine Gruppe von Menschen, die alles verloren, Sie besaßen während des Konflikts, lassen Sie sich nieder in einem Dorf in Ruinen. Sie beabsichtigen, die Wiederherstellung der Stadt aus dem Schutt und re-start in das Leben, in Nachahmung der Frauen von Messina, die Ihre Stadt wieder aufgebaut, zerstört, wie es war durch ein Erdbeben. Oszillierend zwischen Respekt und Misstrauen, co-Existenz zwischen den Mitgliedern der Gruppe ist angespannt. Die Dinge werden kompliziert, wenn ein Gesandter von der Regierung kommt, um zu sagen, dass nichts Ihnen gehört. Der film ist eine freie Adaption der Fragmente der Novelle "Die Frauen von Messina" von sizilianischen Schriftstellers Elio Vittorini.
