Der vom Sprechtheater herkommende Peter Zadek galt, seitdem er 1983 mit Mozarts „Le nozze di Figaro" in Stuttgart seine erste Oper inszenierte, auch als gefragter Opernregisseur. Dieser Live-Mitschnitt entstand 1998 bei den Salzburger Festspielen, wo Zadek die Oper „Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny" realisierte. Unter der Leitung von Dennis Russell Davies wurde sie von einem hochkarätig besetzten Sänger-Ensemble interpretiert: Die Titelpartien sangen so namhafte Künstler wie Catherine Malfitano, Gwyneth Jones und Jerry Hadley.
