Woher kommen wir? Was passierte am Anfang? Und vor allem: Wer ist eigentlich Gott? Um Antworten auf diese Fragen zu finden, besucht Freeman mehrere Kontinente und Kulturen - eine Reise von den Indianern Nordamerikas über Israel bis ins indische Varanasi, die heiligste Stadt des Hinduismus. Er erkundet, welche persönlichen Erfahrungen Menschen mit der Kraft machen, die wir Gott nennen, und entdeckt ganz unterschiedliche Rituale und Gebetsweisen. In den USA begleitet er ein Navajo-Mädchen dabei, wie es sich bei einem Initiationsritual dem Göttlichen nähert. Er geht den Spuren des Stammvaters Abraham in Jerusalem nach und erzählt von den drei Weltreligionen, die hier aufeinandertreffen.
