1821 haben die einfachen Menschen im Hessischen Hinterland trotz harter Arbeit kaum genug zum Leben. Der Strumpfhändler David ersinnt einen Plan, den Geldtransport des Fürsten, der regelmäßig mit Steuergeldern von Biedenkopf nach Gießen fährt, zu überfallen. Mit einer Gruppe aus Bauern und Tagelöhnern wagt er das riskante Unternehmen, das nach zahlreichen Fehlversuchen endlich gelingt. Es gibt genug Geld für alle. Doch ihr Glück währt nicht lange, denn ihr plötzlicher Wohlstand erregt Misstrauen. Sie landen vor Gericht. Zwei von ihnen begehen Selbstmord, die anderen wandern aufs Schafott.
