Amerika ist nach der Zombieapokalypse zum Ödland mutiert. Inmitten dieser Umgebung braust der amerikanische Elitesoldat Colonel Sawyer (Robert Tweten) in jedem Gefährt, das ihn unter die Augen kommt, durch die Gegend. Sein Wunsch ist es, seine Ehefrau, die nicht mehr unter den Lebenden weilt, zur Ruhe zu setzen. Mit ihrer Asche bewaffnet ist er zu ihrem Wunschzielort aufgebrochen und will sie dort an der Küste des Ozeans bestatten. Auf seiner Route trifft er nicht nur auf einige blutdürstende Zombies, die er zu beseitigen hat, sondern trifft auch auf Leute, zu denen er freundschaftliche Bande knüpft. Zu solchen Kontakten zählen etwa eine blinde Fußgängerin und einem älteren Prediger. Die Begegnung mit diesem wird ihn noch einmal entscheidend prägen, denn sein Zuspruch gibt ihm den Mut, nicht den Freitod als Ausweg zu wählen, sondern sich dem Leben zu stellen.
