Der dreizehnjährige Tommy lebt mit seiner jungen Mutter und der großen Schwester auf einer Farm. Seit der Vater im Irak gefallen ist, drücken die Schulden, und nachdem Tommy bereits den Verkauf der Pferde erleben musste, droht jetzt die Notverkauf von Haus und Grund. Just da macht Tommy die Bekanntschaft eines sprechenden Mulis und wittert eine Chance. Denn mit diesem verständigen Gefährten sollte es möglich sein, ein bevorstehendes und mit hohem Preisgeld dotiertes Pferderennen zu gewinnen. Die Konkurrenz reagiert mit Verachtung und Sabotage.
