Tommy und sein Vater leben in einem Naturschutzreservat in Lappland. Sie möchten den Luchs Leevi, der in Gefangenschaft aufgewachsen ist, in die Freiheit entlassen. Aber das Projekt scheitert und der Luchs soll verkauft werden. Da nimmt Tommy, der sich mit dem Luchs angefreundet hat, die Sache selbst in die Hand. Geduldig versucht er, das Tier an das harte Leben in der Wildnis zu gewöhnen. Doch als der Winter hereinbricht, kehrt der Luchs zurück. In seiner Not greift er einige Rentiere im nahegelegenen Dorf an. Die Jagd auf Leevi beginnt und Tommy setzt sein Leben aufs Spiel, um seinen Freund zu retten.
