Ehedem befreundete Kadetten der Offiziersschule Westpoint stehen sich 1865 im Bürgerkrieg in Georgia als feindliche Offiziere beim Kampf um eine Bergstellung gegenüber, von der aus die Südstaatler den Eisenbahn-Nachschub der Yankees lahmlegen. Eine Farmersfrau, die dabei den Jugendfreund wiederfindet, hilft diesem tatkräftig gegen die Nordstaatler und stirbt mit ihm bei der Sprengung des Berges glorreich den Heldentod.
