Innerhalb kürzester Zeit verschwinden Schiffe auf mysteriöse Weise im Meer. Die Unglücke häufen sich. Als die Tochter des Millionärs Miles ebenfalls während eines Seeurlaubs Richtung Nassau verschwindet, wendet sich Marys Vater an den bekannten Meeresbiologen und Forscher Professor Peters. Er begibt sich mit seiner Mannschaft auf die Suche. Während der Fahrt erzählt einer seiner Leute von der Legende unmenschlicher Wesen, die auf dem Meeresgrund leben.
