In 1927/8, der Kameramann Paul Lieberenz begleitet der Schwedische Forscher Sven Hedin auf eine expedition durch Inner-Asien von Peking nach Urumqi. Lufthansa plant die Einführung einer direkten Flug von Berlin nach Peking; meteorologische Beobachtungen gemacht werden musste, Wetter Stationen mussten gebaut werden und das land musste untersucht werden, für Orte, die machen würde, geeignete Flugplätze. Aber der film ist weniger fokussiert auf die Forschung durchgeführt durch die 27 Wissenschaftler insgesamt als auf den Wohnwagen zu, der aus nicht weniger als 300 Kamele und zahlreiche Helfer, wie Sie Ihren Weg machen, mit "Faustian drive" (Siegfried Kracauer), durch felsige und sandige Wüsten.
