Das geheimnisvolle U-Boot »Pionier« - technisch aufs modernste ausgerüstet - gleitet durch die Tiefen zweier Ozeane. Es hat den Befehl von Leningrad nach Wladiwostok zu gelangen, um die fernöstlichen Küsten der UdSSR vor Japan zu schützen. Mitten auf hoher See wird der schiffbrüchige Pawlik von der U-Boot-Besatzung aufgenommen. Für ihn beginnt an Bord der »Pionier« eine aufregende und lebensgefährliche Reise.
