Cook and Peary: The Race to the Pole ist eine unverhohlen voreingenommene Neuauflage der Kontroverse um die „Eroberung" des Nordpols. Robert E. Peary (Rod Steiger), ein US-Marinekommandant und schamloser Selbstdarsteller, macht sich 1909 auf den Weg durch die arktische Wüste, um den Pol zu entdecken, eine Expedition, die viele andere versucht, aber nicht geschafft haben. Sein Hauptkonkurrent ist Dr. Frederick A. Cook (Richard Chamberlain), der darauf besteht, dass er den Pol bereits 1908 erreicht habe. Obwohl die Experten (und der US-Kongress) zu dem Schluss kommen, dass Perry der Erste war, ist die öffentliche Meinung fest auf Cooks Seite – ebenso wie dieser Fernsehfilm.
