Ein junger ranger im Montana wildnis entdeckt den großen Kräften der Natur und lernen die Bedeutung von Ehre, Integrität und Vertrauen. Legendäre veteran ranger Bill Bell erzieht den Jungen Mann und führt ihn zu einem Mann zu entwickeln. Das Jahr 1919-eine Zeit, als ein ranger bedeutete mehr als das operative teure Ausrüstung. Waldbrände gekämpft wurden mit Mumm und Mut, nicht Chemikalien und Flugzeuge. Bill Bell war eines der härtesten ranger in einer elite-crew und der sehr robuste Männer. Eine Figur des heroischen Proportionen, er war allgemein gefürchtet und von allen respektiert. Es wurde sogar gemunkelt, dass er zu einer Zeit getötet, ein Schaf-farmer, die nur angeheizt, seine bereits enorme reputation. Der junge ranger tut alles, um weiterhin in der Gunst von Bill Bell, der senior ranger, die er vergöttert. Ihre zaghafte Beziehung entwickelt sich zu einer Freundschaft, die durch eine witzige und heroische rite de passage, in der die Jungen ranger erfüllt die test-und die Frau seiner Träume.
